The Renowned Journalist, who was portrayed by Robert Redford in the mid-1970s corruption exposé the Watergate Film, offered heartfelt praise to the late actor, calling him “a noble and principled force for good”.

Through a post made on digital platforms, Woodward disclosed that he and Redford shared a bond for half a century and that he “held him in high regard” for his loyal companionship, his fiery independence, and his dedication to leveraging his stature to make the world better, fairer, and more hopeful for others.
Redford’s Role in Watergate Exposure
Woodward emphasized that Redford was instrumental in bringing to light the Watergate scandal, encouraging both Woodward and his reporting partner to narrate the events through the lens of their firsthand reporting. This collaboration resulted in the publication of their nonfiction account the Watergate Chronicle in mid-1974, which preceded Nixon’s resignation later that year. Redford later acquired the screen rights and appeared alongside Dustin Hoffman in the celebrated movie adaptation.
Reflections on Relevance
Woodward mentioned discussions held not long ago with Redford, in which the actor stated that he had rewatched the film in 2021 and was “taken aback” by how relevant and current it remained, noting that “the core issues persist”. Redford commented, “We don’t have Nixon any more, we have Trump”.
“We live in a country where we are unable to call ourselves the United States of America. We just can’t. We’re the Politically Fractured Nation because of the political parties and they’re deeply entrenched in their fears.”

Redford offered insight directly on Trump, after Woodward suggested that Trump was undermining democracy. “He lacks comprehension of democratic principles”, Redford observed. “Hence, dismantling it becomes simple. Ignorance facilitates destruction. One may even deny its very existence.”
