The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
