Premier League Headlines: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Must Get Better'
From the world of Premier League updates, a key midfielder has been given a significant suspension, a head coach has pointed out a defender's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline betterment after a chaotic win.
Mejbri Handed Four-Match Suspension and Financial Penalty
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was given a four-game suspension and a £15,000 fine for improper behaviour during a recent match versus Leeds United. The governing body said the player faced a separate disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting in the direction of visiting fans around the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A release said: “A disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct in their Premier League game with Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he behaved against the rules of the game and/or in a poor manner by using abusive and unacceptable conduct by spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”
It added, “Mejbri subsequently admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game ban and a fine after a hearing. The panel's full explanation for the sanction will be published at a later date.” The team, now in 19th place in the standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Mistakes to Prove an Argument
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is not a problem at team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing poorly during a 3-1 defeat against Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their setback. He presented his argument by singling out Tosin, the most experienced outfield player on the pitch, who delivered a mistake-riddled display at the back.
“People always mention experience after we fail to win,” the coach said. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I understand that when we lose, people are constantly looking for the reason why, but in my view why we didn’t win against Leeds is not because of the experience, it was because we were not good enough.”
He added, “Who is the oldest one for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? So, it isn't related to experience. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Has to Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has stated his team have taken lessons from their midweek thriller against Fulham with the game has now been in the past. City survived for a 5-4 victory during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.
Coming after they fought off a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in their previous game, it raised further doubts about if they are resilient enough to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. At this level, at all the clubs, you have to learn from what happens performances and results and focus on what's next.”
“Of course I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We try to analyse what happened, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and the five goals by Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? So, always done plenty of good things. But the number of attempts had Leeds ? Three? Scored two. That ratio is good. And attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to be better.”
Newcastle Prioritise on Defenders' Contracts
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and is pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
This allows Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's agreement ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.
“My first three or four days after starting is when I discovered that Sandro’s deal was much more secure than the one I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that the club wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the home game against Burnley this Saturday, and he expected to be out for a further period.
5. Nuno Says Paquetá Returns for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when the side play Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it won't be repeated as he personally admitted his mistake. We discussed it internally. I believe it is over and will not be repeated.”
Nuno also acknowledged the significant pressure facing his team, who are in the relegation zone before Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he said. “It is the situation. We must confront it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We can't shy away from it.”
Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino
The Spanish midfielder could continue as Arsenal’s central striker despite the club's usual frontmen are fit again. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency number nine because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
