Oxford Union President-Elect Removed Due to Conservative Activist Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were against the motion.
The announcement stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.
In a statement, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
