Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
