{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third rotation when marshals were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the FIA
"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
