Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe Bridged the Gap Among Rock Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that anyone who's mastered the epic lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

Harmonix previously tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, showcasing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music because the cost was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – RedOctane had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however once it got included in the title young people discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised the genre, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still unreleased stateside, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song on the tour bus, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It sold more than 500,000 units upon release, while demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% at a time as the industry faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed fanaticism within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo while hitting a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a successful tour when their hit was featured on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it risked overshadow all other accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “Should you just hear a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, be it for cars, clothes or video games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the scene active, and there’s expectations of a new product from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has begun work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to persist with new generations.”
