The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
