The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
