A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
