Manchester Arena attack conspirator Hashem Abedi has refused to leave his detention area to be present in court, where he faces accusations of trying to murder three prison officers in an alleged terrorist attack.

The 28-year-old convict, currently undertaking a life sentence for assisting his suicide bomber brother in killing 22 people during the 2017 atrocity, was scheduled to make his initial court appearance via remote connection from prison.

Three prison staff members – two male and one female officer – were taken for medical treatment following the altercation at the high-security facility in County Durham, with a pair sustaining stab wounds.

Legal authorities have indicated they are considering the offenses as having terrorist motivations.

Abedi faces charges of three counts of trying to kill, one count of violent assault resulting in injury, and one count of carrying a bladed weapon.

The court was informed that the accused has refused to exit his cell at HMP Belmarsh and has also declined legal representation.

Presiding judicial officer Paul Goldspring stated, "There exists no power to proceed the case in his non-appearance," and postponed the proceedings until 25 September.

He assured the court he would guarantee the accused is present at the next hearing, stating, "I will order his in-person appearance, but if not possible, alternate plans for a remote connection will be made."

In addition to the reported use of makeshift blades, the inmate was also accused with hurling scalding substances at officers during the incident.

At the time of the event, the Prison Officers Association stated that employees sustained critical wounds, including burns, liquid burns, and puncture injuries in what they described as an sudden and brutal assault.

Abedi was found guilty of assisting his brother the suicide attacker in the 2017 bombing, which took the lives of 22 people and injured numerous others following an pop music event.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 55-year minimum term in mid-2020.
